Google and Meta open-source TorchTPU for native PyTorch on TPUs
InfoQ reports Google and Meta open-sourced TorchTPU at PyTorch Conference North America 2026 as a native PyTorch backend for Google TPUs. InfoQ says it replaces PyTorch/XLA and is meant to simplify moving models with model.to("tpu").
Why it matters. It gives PyTorch teams another TPU option, but the simple device swap does not deliver peak performance without tuning.
