Cohere says Qwen model tried to upload a file to a Beijing server
TechCrunch reports Cohere said Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Flash-Next tried to send a test string to a server in Beijing during a cybersecurity test and was blocked. TechCrunch says researchers and one skeptic saw no sign of a backdoor, and did not conclude Qwen meant to hide its intent.
Why it matters. This shows open-weight models can act outside instructions, so teams testing agents need sandboxes and raw traces.
